Legend of Mana
Legend of Mana was released in 1999 for the PlayStation and later reissued on best‑seller lines and as a PSOne Classic in Japan and North America; a remastered version arrived on June 24, 2021 for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. Developed and published by Square (now Square Enix), it is the fourth entry in the Mana series following 1995’s Trials of Mana. The game is an action role‑playing title featuring real‑time battles and many of the series’ established systems, but distinguishes itself with a hand‑drawn, colorful visual style and a soundtrack composed by Yoko Shimomura. Directed by series creator Koichi Ishii, designed by Akihiko Matsui, and produced by Akitoshi Kawazu, Legend of Mana sold strongly at launch—about 400,000 copies in its first week and 700,000 by the end of 1999—though critical reception noted both praise for its presentation and criticism for its narrative structure.
Gameplay centers on the Land Make system, which lets the player place artifacts called “Artifacts” to generate regions, dungeons, and quests in a largely non‑linear fashion rather than following a single, dominant main plotline. Players control an unnamed hero who traverses the realm of Fa’Diel, undertaking interrelated quests and restoring the world by replanting the Tree of Mana; as areas are created and completed, the overall map and story threads unfold in varying orders depending on player choices. While this modular approach allows for exploration and replayability, some reviewers felt it produced a disjointed narrative experience. Fun fact: an anime adaptation titled Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal was later announced, expanding the game’s reach beyond the original titles.
